The Better India is an attempt to bring out t happy stories, unsung heroes and heroines, small good deeds, and showcase them to the world. We hope that by showcasing these here, we might be able to inspire at least one amongst you, the readers, to do something that leaves an impact. Small or big, but an impact. Karmayog is a unique free platform for concerned citizens and provides a networking platform for ordinary citizens and NGOs to engage with each other, and with government, media, corporates, institutions, etc
7. Goonj – Making clothing a matter of concern
A unique resource mobilization initiative providing clothes and other basic amenities to millions in the far-flung villages by turning one’s wastage into a resource for another. Initiated in 1998 with just 67 clothes, they now send out over 20,000kgs of material every month. A force of over 300 volunteers, GOONJ is implementing its various initiatives through over 150 grassroot organizations, panchayats, Ashoka fellows & social activists in parts of 20 states of the country. GOONJ has recently been awarded the ‘Indian NGO of the year' award for its governance and practices.
8. Real Heroes – ordinary people, extraordinary service
Real Heroes is an initiative that recognizes and acknowledges ordinary Indians who are making a difference to people’s lives. In its third edition, this annual felicitation will honor 24 unknown and unsung heroes of India. http://www.cnnibnrealheroes.com
